Minnesota Housing Veterans Services

Many state and federal programs exist to ensure that Minnesota veterans get specialized housing services. Housing related services to benefit military and Veterans include homeownership opportunities, short-term mortgage assistance, financial counseling and mortgage foreclosure prevention assistance, mortgage or rental housing assistance, and supportive housing.

To ensure services are effective and accessible for members of the military and Veterans and their families, Minnesota Housing is increasing the opportunities for military and Veterans to access:

Supportive Housing for Veterans with Disabilities or Homeless Veterans
Minnesota Housing programs are guided by our vision for all Minnesotans to have the opportunity to live in decent, safe, affordable homes and strong communities. Veterans will benefit by Minnesota Housing's strategic goal to end long-term homelessness in Minnesota by 2010.

According to the 2003 Wilder Research Statewide Survey of Homeless Veterans in Minnesota:
* 25% of the adult male homeless population in Minnesota has been made up of Veterans since 1991
* 26% percent of the homeless population, including 16% of the long-term homeless population, are military Veterans

The 2003 survey identifies a need for 640 housing opportunities for long-term homeless Veteran's under Governor Pawlenty's Plan to End Long-Term Homelessness. As of October 2006, 209 new housing opportunities for homeless Veterans have been created. (60 units in St. Cloud, 138 units in Hennepin County and 11 in Mankato).

Ending Long-Term Homelessness Initiative - information on the plan to end long-term homelessness in Minnesota by 2010 by providing housing and supportive services to 4,000 households experiencing long-term homelessness.

Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans - provides assistance throughout Minnesota to positively motivated veterans and their families who are homeless or experiencing other life crises.

Veteran's Homes Board - serves Veterans and their spouses who qualify for skilled nursing care, board and care or transitional housing services.

Veteran's Administration Medical Center - provides medical care and can provide referrals to specialized services within the VA system of care.
