RentHelpMN is Open for Applications

RentHelpMN Emergency Rental Assistance helps renters who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic get caught up on past-due rent and utility bills. Rent, utility and other housing expenses incurred since March 13, 2020, are eligible.

Visit renthelpmn.org to learn more about the program and eligibility requirements and, or to begin an application.

You may also call 211 for more information, to ask questions about an existing application, or to be referred to a Field Partner who can assist with the application process. The 211 helpline has dedicated multilingual staff available to answer questions about RentHelpMN, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

RentHelpMN is Protection Against Eviction

If a renter is facing eviction for non-payment of rent, a pending application for emergency rental assistance is a protection. Renters who receive an eviction notice must still respond and need to show up to court to show proof of their application. Staff from Minnesota Housing are present at court sessions to assist. Additional Resources:

Minnesota renters and homeowners can apply for help with energy bills through the Minnesota Department of Commerce Energy Assistance Program.

Renters and homeowners are also protected by the Cold Weather Rule which is governed by the Public Utilities Commission and protects against utility shutoffs between October 1 and April 30. You must make arrangements with your utility provider to enroll.
